How to Mentally Calculate the Day of the Week for Any Date

No calendar, no phone. Two secrets and some practice 🧠

PART 1

The skill you're about to steal ⚑

Some people can hear any date and tell you the weekday in about two seconds, without looking at a calendar.

It isn't memorization. There are two things to learn, and then some practice. By the bottom of this page, you can do this too.

PART 2

Secret #1: The Clock of Days πŸ•

Weekdays go around in a circle of 7. This is what remainders are actually good for. Try these three, and answer before you look.

PART 3

Secret #2: The Secret Squad πŸ“…

Here's all of . The dates marked in gold have something in common. Tap any date to check it yourself.

The doubles
"9-to-5 at the 7-11"
The oddballs
Secret #2: every year has one weekday that all of these dates share. It's called the year's Doomsday, coined by John Conway, who published this method in 1973 (Doomsday rule on Wikipedia β†—).
Remember it in two lines: the doubles (4/4 Β· 6/6 Β· 8/8 Β· 10/10 Β· 12/12) + "I work 9-to-5 at the 7-11" (9/5 Β· 5/9 Β· 7/11 Β· 11/7). Then three odd ones: Ο€-day 3/14 πŸ›ž, the last day of February, and Jan 3, or Jan 4 in a leap year, since February borrows a day.

You can check this with your clock. Count the days between them: . Every gap is a whole number of weeks, so these dates always land on the same weekday, in every year.
PART 4

Your first real trick: any date this year 🎯

Find the nearest squad date, count the leftover days, then walk that many steps from the Doomsday. Let's do one together.

PART 5

Time travel: what day were YOU born? πŸŽ‚

One more thing you already know: 365 Γ· 7 leaves remainder 1. So each New Year the Doomsday slides forward 1 day, or 2 if the new year has a Feb 29:

πŸš€ The Time Machine

Enter any year and the slide rule does the rest.

πŸ₯‹ Black belt: jump straight to any year without stepping (Conway's dozens trick)

Stepping one year at a time works, but 26 steps is slow. Conway counted in dozens instead. A dozen years is 12 slides plus 3 leap days, which is 15, and 15 on a clock of 7 comes out to 1. So one dozen years moves the Doomsday by a single day.

Try any year: 2026 (drag the number)

For 19-something years the same steps work, but start from Wednesday, which was 1900's Doomsday, instead of Tuesday.

PART 6

Perform it! 🎩

Three rounds of practice. The helpers disappear as you go.

🎩 Who to thank for this trick: John Conway published the Doomsday Rule β†— in 1973. To get fast at it, he set up his computer to quiz him with a random date every time he logged in, until he could answer in about two seconds.

1. The Leftover Trick πŸ•

Draw the 7-day circle and jump around it.
Say: "Add 700 days to a Tuesday? Still Tuesday! Only the leftover after throwing away 7s matters."

2. The Secret Squad πŸ“…

Show 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12 in any calendar, then Jan 3 and Ο€-day.
Say: "Check them β€” all the SAME weekday. And 9-to-5 at the 7-11 too. Every year has a Doomsday!"

3. The Yearly Slide πŸŽ‚

Explain why calendars shift.
Say: "365 days = 52 weeks + 1 leftover. That's why your birthday moves one weekday every year β€” two after a leap!"

4. The Performance 🎩

Have someone pick a date; think out loud afterwards.
Say: "Nearest squad date… count the leftover… walk from the Doomsday. Ask me another!"
